Catholic Baptism Gifts

Baptism of a newborn (or christening) is a momentous occasion for a catholic family. It is the
first of the Catholic Sacraments of Initiation. The act of baptism introduces a new member into
the Body of Christ and represents a rebirth in the Holy Spirit, cleansed from sin.
In practice water is poured, with the spoken words, “I baptize you in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

Other elements include anointing with Holy oil and light taken from Paschal Candles.
This is an immensely symbolic occasion, emphasizing the truth of grace and mercy through the Lord Jesus
Christ – the very essence of Catholic faith and Christianity.
How often is it said that religion is an evil that divides the human race and brings forth strife and
conflict. Even though we disagree, part of this statement is true in the harshest sense of the word when
looking at struggles such as the Middle-east conflict and other historical events. For our daily lives however,
we can do a lot towards advancing unity and peace by respecting the small things that our fellow man hold
dear.
It therefore goes without saying that such an occasion as the baptism of a newborn catholic baby warrants
a thoughtful gift, fitting to the event.
In reality the newborn is not supposed to receive just catholic type gifts. It is completely understandable
(and expected) for the guests to ‘mix it up’ with a wide variety of gift types. Here we have a look though
at the most popular catholic gifts:
Christening Wall Crosses
These wall crosses come in a variety of different styles, types, shapes and sizes. You can either opt
for a straightforward cross without any engraving, patterns or figures. Or you can opt for a more distinct
cross with perhaps a praying angel or a memorable piece of scripture.
Rosaries
Rosaries come in different shapes. Any catholic store will more than likely stock a wide range for you
to choose from. If you decide on this as a gift, also consider a rosary case which will ‘round it of’ nicely.
Religious figurines of Jesus and Mary the Mother of God
These are very popular gift for catholic christenings. Both Jesus and Mary the Mother of God are central
and important figures in the Catholic faith. What better way therefore to remind the child of his firm foundation
in Christ through a figurine?
Bible
& Catholic Books
The bible is probably the most popular gift at christenings. As with most catholic baptism gifts, chances
are you will be amazed at the variety the market has to offer. ‘Crowd favorites’ have always been the catholic
picture bible, a bible specially designed for little ones, or you can opt for books that have a collection
of bible stories.
Jewelry
Two of the most popular jewelry gifts for catholic baptisms are a crucifix or a baptism medal. Both the
crucifix and medals come in different materials with the most common being gold and silver. Most medals
contain an engraving of a guardian angel – something the child will hold onto for many years.
